Governor Phil Bryant Files for Re-Election

Campaign is well-prepared heading into the election with $2.5 million cash-on-hand and statewide county organization in place.

JACKSON, MS – Governor Phil Bryant, currently serving his first term as Mississippi’s 64th Governor, filed his paperwork for re-election today.

“I’m honored to serve as Governor, and I’m running for re-election because I want to continue making a positive difference for the people of our state,” said Governor Bryant. “Through conservative principles and policies, we’re moving in the right direction with economic development, balanced budgets, education reform, public safety enhancements and health care improvements, but there’s still more work to be done in the future.”

Under Governor Bryant’s leadership, Mississippi has climbed the rankings. Mississippi is now one of the ten best states in America for economic development according to Area Development Magazine, is the fourth most tax-friendly state in the country, and has the sixth-best regulatory environment in the country. Governor Bryant’s leadership has led to many other accomplishments including:

  • Filling Mississippi’s Rainy Day fund for emergencies.
  • Allowing businesses to create 16,000 new jobs since 2011.
  • Reducing teen pregnancy by 15%.
  • Reducing the unemployment rate from 9.8% in 2011 to 7.2% today.
  • Growing personal income and private investment in Mississippi.

“One of the reasons our state is improving is the transformational change in education that conservatives passed and signed into law in 2013,” said Bryant. The 2013 education reform package opened Mississippi to charter schools, began an A-F grading system for public schools so parents would know how their school is performing, and helped make sure students are better prepared by ending social promotion of third graders who do not read at grade level. Governor Bryant has also signed more than 40 tax cuts into law, has increased funding for workforce training, and is proposing more tax cuts for working Mississippians going forward.

“As Governor, I’ll continue standing up for Mississippi values of faith, family, and freedom so people can have more control over their own lives,” added Governor Bryant. “I will continue working to make Mississippi the safest state in the country for the unborn, to protect our Second Amendment rights, and to stop illegal immigration.”

In addition to Governor Bryant’s accomplishments over the last three years, the campaign is financially well-prepared with $2.5 million cash-on-hand. The Republican Governors Association has also pledged its support to assist Governor Bryant’s campaign. “The Republican Governors Association has an extremely strong record of investing crucial resources in the re-election of our incumbents. We are prepared and ready to provide any necessary financial assistance to Governor Bryant’s campaign to help ensure he is able to continue driving Mississippi’s success,” said Governor Bill Haslam, Chair of the Republican Governors Association.
